Microsoft Has "Bali Project" - What is it?
Microsoft is currently working on a project with the code "Bali" -Yes, you have not misread it. Bali in Indonesia is indeed its inspiration. This project is designed to give users control of the data collected about them. This project was started by Microsoft Research and is in a private trial.
Mary Jo Foley, broadcast technology who is a regular contributor to Microsoft, first saw this project from the "Longhorn" tweet that was responded to by "Walking Cat". An anonymous figure who often reveals info about Microsoft is presented. Longhorn Overview Bali as "a project that can access all connection information and user-owned accounts (inverseprivacyproject)".
Armed with that info, Mary Jo found the Bali project page. This page contains people who have a code related to entering the site. The "About" page for the Bali project explains that this is a "new private bank data that allows users to control all data collected about them... This bank will allow users to store all data (both processed raw materials) made by them. This allows users to visualize, manage, control, share and monetize data".
According to this About page, Bali is based on the concept of "Inverse Privacy", a title of a paper published in 2014 by Yuri Gurevich, Efim Hudis, and Jeannette Wing, all of whom work for Microsoft Research. A personal item information is reversed if several parties have access to it, but the maker / user does not. Examples of this kind of data are data provided by health care providers, police, toll road operators, commercial stores, and employees. As we know, users deposit data, but they don't know which data is received and don't benefit from it.
This project is still in its early stages, in the sense that the developer supports the assistance of personal data from various websites and has the ability to 'see' the data.
Although not all project from Microsoft Research will be commercialized, Mary Jo Foley believes that Bali has a great opportunity to produce commercial products, specifically for users relating to data security and safety. We look forward to what the Bali project will look like next.
